3 Steps to Content Development, Part III: Content Marketing

Now that you have your content written and ready to go, it is time for content marketing. Content marketing is about taking the content you’ve developed and getting it out to your target audience. Like they say about the falling tree in the forest when nobody’s around: you could produce the most amazing content in the world and you won’t get the results you’re looking for unless you get that content under the eyeballs of your target audience.

There are three steps to content marketing that we feel are most effective

1. Get the most mileage out of your content – For example, take ideas from a white paper to write a blog or blogs. A white paper is the perfect place to pull ideas from. Because it should only be between 5-10 pages long you can select a few main points and go more in depth about them in a blog.

2. Social media marketingAlmost any content that you write should be shared on Facebook, LinkedIn, Google Plus, Pinterest, Twitter, or any other social media sites you use. By providing people with compelling content you will pull them into your site, generate leads, and convert those leads into clients.

Also, join relevant and active groups, learn what is appropriate to post where, and get connected with relevant people. Create a list of the groups, pages, and people that provide relevant information. You can refer to this list anytime you are looking for new information, writing topics, assistance, or places to post your information. This is a great way to gain connections, stay involved, and become a thought leader in your industry.

3. Online outreach – Online outreach is another great method of pulling people into your site and becoming known in your industry. You first need to find out where your clients and customers are. Are they on Facebook, LinkedIn, a blogging site, or another industry related site? Wherever they are is where you need to be.

In order to establish yourself as a thought leader you can guest blog, comment on other blogs, join the conversation on social media, and of course create compelling content. Anything you do outside of your own website should link back to your content. For example, find a comment, article, or blog relating to your most recent blog post. Post a comment like, “Great article, Bob. I really enjoyed hearing another person’s perspective on engaging content. I’d love for you to check out our most recent blog post on the same topic.” And then link back to your blog. That allows people an easy way to get information and find out more about you. Make sure you choose relevant sources that will be seen by your target audience.

All of these three steps – content strategycontent writing, and content marketing – work simultaneously to make the content development process efficient and effective.
